THE OLD MONSTERS OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM — THE SOCIOPOLITICAL DIMENSION OF ALGORITHMIC INFRASTRUCTURE
CURATOR / ANA TEIXEIRA PINTO
In 1930, the Italian philosopher António Gramsci, writing in his prison cell, described the institutional crisis of his time as a political impasse: “The old system is dying but the new one cannot form itself”. During this hiatus, “a great variety of morbid symptoms will arise”. In the aftermath of the 2008 crisis and subsequent worldwide turmoil, a free translation popularised Gramsci’s phrase as “now is the time of the monsters”. This performative conference aims to draw a map of emerging algorithmic governmentality and the (old) monsters that haunt it.
